This is a scene in a movie Almost Famous that struck me most. The plane is about to crash. In the middle of the turbulent sky the band members start confession aloud things they’ve hidden in their heart of hearts: grave sins, apologies still unsaid, and the hatred and love they felt toward one another. Then the plane stops shaking, and they realize they had just gone through a moment of repentance, conviction and utter honesty – because they thought they were going to die.
Have you had a similar near-death experience? Well, I have not but ever since a very close relative of mine died a few years ago, it taught me to live every day as if it were my last. It taught me to always have time to visit my relatives whenever I am in our hometown.

In Steven Covey’s book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People the reader is asked to write his Mission Statement. Want to know mine? “To make myself and the people around me feel loved, laugh and live life to the fullest.” I put this in my cellphone outbox so that I read it daily and be reminded. Sometimes life is not easy and I tend to forget my Mission Statement.

When I was still in college I used to be a member of a religious organization in our school. One of the things I have learned from Sister Stella (she’s a nun in-charge of our group) is about praying for other people. She said that prayer can also serve as a means of expressing our interrelatedness with others. That if ever we are sick and when we are prayed for by others, even by people we don’t know, we receive benefit in the form of fewer complications in surgery and faster healing time.
And when we direct care and attention outside ourselves toward another person’s wellbeing, when we unite ourselves with others in the commonality of shared pain and shared humanity, there is no doubt that we are healthier for it.
